While passenger railroads are not as common as they once were, we still have many opportunities in North America to ride Long Distance Passenger train service.
Alaska Railroad
The Alaska Railroad operates passenger trains from Anchorage Southbound to Seward Alaska, and Northbound to Fairbanks by way of Denali National Park. Trains operate daily from Mid-May through Mid-September and only on select days throughout the winter months. The Alaska Railroad serves locals and visitors alike and provides breathtaking scenery of the great state of Alaska.

Amtrak
Amtrak is "America's Railroad" and provides a basic network of long distance trains throughout the United States. Long Distance trains are typically overnight trains that offer Coach and Sleeping Cars as well as a Lounge Car and Dining Cars.
Corridor Trains typically operate in one region, and offer Coach and Business Class cars and many times will have a Cafe car on board. The Amtrak network is quite extensive, and more trains are being added each year.

One of Amtrak's most scenic and famous trains is the "Coast Starlight" which travels daily from Los Angeles, California and travels up the Western Coast of the United States to Seattle, Washington. Visit our AMTRAK COAST STARLIGHT page for more information and a large collection of photos from my travels on board this train.
Other Amtrak favorites for scenery include the California Zephyr which travels from Chicago Illinois to Emeryville California passing through the Rocky Mountains and Sierra's on the way. Another fan favorite is the Empire Builder which travels from Chicago Illinois to Seattle Washington or Portland Oregon (the train splits and serves both Western Terminals) by way of Glacier National Park.
