Dry Gulch Railroad Steam Train - Hersheypark, Pennsylvania
The Dry Gulch Railroad at Hersheypark in Hershey, Pennsylvania, is a 24" gauge railway with propane-fired steam locomotives built for the park.
The Dry Gulch Railroad opened in 1961.
The Hersheypark Steam Train ride is a small loop within the center of the park passing rides, rollercoasters, and traveling over a scenic trestle. The train makes 1-loop without stopping at other stations.
Two steam locomotives are on the roster, both were built by Crown Metal but delivered at different times.
#1985 "Janelle" | 4-4-0 | Built by Crown
#1907 "Scooter"| 4-4-0 | Built by Crown
When the Dry Gulch Railroad opened in 1961, it featured a Crown Locomotive named "Meridia" which was built for the park. In 1984 Scooter was delivered as a replacement to Meridia who was having mechanical issues and was sent back to Crown. In 1990 or 1991 the park received "Janelle" from Crown. I have a theory that Janelle is the rebuilt Meridia. Crown officially went out of business in 1989, so the Janelle may have been the last locomotive delivered by them.
Hersheypark also operates a Monorail Attraction that runs in a loop over the park with views of Downtown Hershey, Pennsylvania, and the working Hershey Chocolate Factory. The monorail has operated since 1969.
In 1910 the original Hershey Park opened the Miniature Railway, a narrow-gauge electric railway designed and was built in Lancaster, PA. The railway was chosen by Milton Hershey himself and was the second attraction he purchased for the park. The first was a carousel. The train operated until 1971 and was then placed in storage. In 2007 the Friends of the Hershey Trolley partnered with Hersheypark to restore the railway cars.
In 1952 Hersheypark added the Miniature Train which was built by the Miniature Train Company. The train has moved to various locations both in and outside of Hersheypark. It last operated at the park in 2014 and is currently in storage.
