| Grand Canyon Railway #29 is a 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type Steam Locomotive built by ALCO in 1906 for the Lake Superior and Ishpeming. It was purchased by the Grand Canyon Railway and operated from 1990 until 2008 when the Grand Canyon Railways new owners decided to discontinue steam train service. In 2009, Grand Canyon Railway returned 2-8-2 Mikado #4960 into service pulling passenger trains for special events only (about once a month throughout the year). #29 has been sitting on display at the Grand Canyon Railway Depot all this time. A couple months ago, #29 was reportedly moved into the Grand Canyon Railway Repair Shops and rumors started buzzing. The locomotive had been stored serviceable, but with no official word on what they were doing, I wasn't ready to pack my bags for Arizona just yet. Well now the locomotive is out of the shop and steaming for the first time since 2008, and the Grand Canyon Railway has officially announced the first public trips she will be pulling later this month. The Grand Canyon Railway Website currently lists "Train #1" (9:30 AM Departure.) operating with either Steam Locomotive #29 or #4960 on August 24, 25, & 26. On August 27th, Both #29 and #4960 will pull a Double-Header over the entire line on "Train #1" (9:30 AM Departure). The last Double-Header to operate over the Grand Canyon Railway was in 2012, when Santa Fe #3751 and Grand Canyon #4960 pulled a special charter train for the Arizona State Centennial. These events are for the 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service. The Amtrak Exhibit Train will also be on display August 25-28.
