#261 was delivered new to the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad - the "Milwaukee Road" - in 1944. 
#261 was retired from revenue service in 1954. 
#261 was donated to and owned by the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin from 1958 - 2010. 

Milwaukee Road #261 is owned and operated by the Friends of the #261 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
