Where to Find Steam Train Rides in 2025
Welcome to your state-by-state guide to historic railroads operating steam locomotives in the 2025 season. Steam locomotives are costly and time-consuming to operate, so we always recommend calling or emailing the railroad directly to confirm that steam will be running during your visit.
Our state-by-state list highlights each railroad based on how frequently they operate steam:
- STEAM FAVORITE – Almost all departures are steam-powered.
- REGULARLY SCHEDULED – Steam doesn’t run daily, but follows a consistent schedule (for example, every Saturday).
- LIMITED SCHEDULE – Steam operates only for special events or extended excursions.
While this page focuses on Scenic Railroads, Railroad Museums, and Heritage Lines in the USA that operate steam, be sure to check out our Theme Park Steam page for theme parks operating steam regularly and our Mainline Steam page for the largest locomotives running special excursions on mainline railroads.
Don’t miss our Steam Train Events Calendar, where you can find the latest updates on railfan events, photo charters, and special steam excursions across the country.

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad | Antonito, Colorado
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad operates over 64 miles of historic 36" narrow-gauge track originally built by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in 1881. Trains depart from two small towns on either end of the line: Antonito on the high desert plains of southern Colorado, and Chama in the pine forests of northern New Mexico.
From Antonito, the line climbs gradually through wide-open sagebrush country before entering rugged mountain terrain on the approach to Osier and Cumbres Pass. From Chama, trains begin the day with a dramatic, steep climb through forests and narrow cuts—one of the most iconic steam railroad ascents in the United States.
The route winds through tight curves, crosses tall trestles, passes through tunnels, and skirts deep gorges and sweeping valleys. Many original railroad structures—section houses, water tanks, snow sheds, and telegraph lines—still stand beside the track, preserving the feeling of a working 19th-century mountain railroad.
All trains are steam-powered. Typically, one train departs Antonito and another departs Chama. They meet at the halfway point at Osier, where passengers enjoy a hot lunch before continuing on. Riders can choose to ride the full 64-mile route or travel one way with a return by motorcoach, offering several flexible options for planning your trip.

New Mexico
Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad | Chama, New Mexico
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad operates over 64 miles of historic 36" narrow-gauge track originally built by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1881.

West Virginia
Cass Scenic Railroad | Cass, West Virginia
The Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass, West Virginia is a fully steam-powered heritage railroad operating over a historic standard-gauge logging line built in 1901. Trains are pushed upgrade by powerful geared steam locomotives, climbing grades as steep as 11% and navigating a series of switchbacks that make it one of the most dramatic railroad climbs in the country. Riders take in sweeping mountain views and classic Appalachian forest scenery along the way.
The town of Cass itself is preserved as a living museum, with original company houses, the company store, jail, mayor’s office, Masonic Lodge, and the restored C&O depot. Guided tours of the locomotive shop are often available, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the railroad’s steam operations.
Two steam-powered excursions run up the mountain from Cass: the Whittaker Station trip, a 4-mile ride to a recreated logging camp, and the Bald Knob excursion, which continues to one of the highest points in West Virginia for panoramic views.
Cass also operates the Greenbrier Express from Cass to Durbin, a 15-mile trip along the Greenbrier River on the former C&O line. For special events, trains sometimes travel to the ghost town of Spruce, West Virginia.
